Carefully Prescribed Cases

Dear Deanna,

If the doctor is familiar with the patient's drug use he/she will certainly be careful and appropriate in prescribing any medication for the bi-polar condition.

Anti-depressant and anti-psychotic medications have potential to cause great harm if used improperly, and taken in combination with other medications or illegal street drugs, the patient can experience serious ramifications. It is best that the doctor know everything about any drug use.

Also, remember doctors and medications can only do so much. Drugs for bipolar try to re-balance brain chemistry, which is specific to each individual and VERY complex and difficult manage.

If, against doctor's orders, the patient takes additional drugs or alcohol the bipolar disorder is likely to worsen rather than improve. Anyone with a major mental disorder is much more at risk for a bad outcome if they drink or take drugs not prescribed by the physician.
