Boyfriend started heroin what do I do?

My boyfriend of one year has done heroin 6 times in a 2 month period. He has also been in prison now for 3 and a half months, he will be there for one year and be doing treatment programs for the next 29 months.

Does he have a chance? Or am I wasting my time?

Dear Amber,

Heroin addiction is difficult, but it sounds like your boyfriend is in the place where he is supposed to be. If he is being given treatment, this is his best opportunity.

As for you, it does not sound like he has given you much to base a serious relationship on, as his desire to do heroin is greater than his desire to be a loving companion to you. He can't have it both ways. If he wants to throw his life away on heroin, there will be no room for you.

If he is worthy of you, he will take his treatment and get into a healthy recovery program. There is hope. It has been done. You have to be smart and keep your eyes open wide. Don't let yourself be taken advantage of. Set boundaries and stick to them and be willing to walk away if you need to.
