Female friend using heroin?

I have a female friend who is about 41 years old. She has been using heroin for the past 6 years. I haven’t seen her for a while. What kind of lifestyle do female heroin addicts lead?

Each of us is wonderfully and uniquely made, drugs effect us differently.

Dear Birfle,

God has made each of us completely uniquely, our brains are unique to us. Heroin attacks the brain and effects each of us differently. It’s very hard to say what kind of a life your friend has been living.

She may only occasionally use heroin or she may be using it multiple times a day. She may be addicted to it, in which case it will attack her brain and she will focus 100% on getting heroin and exclude EVERYTHING from her life.

Some of us can occasionally use heroin and not become addicted to it, while others of us become addicted to it the first time we use it.

So it is very hard to speculate about how heroin is effecting your friends life without talking with her about it and trying to understand why she is using it. Also trying to help her decide what could be changed in her life so that she would no longer need it.

You may want to begin attending Al-anon meetings because these meetings will help you to better understand what you and your friend are dealing with. There are MANY good Al-anon meetings to choose from in Portland.
