Dear Vicky,

With addiction… honesty truly is the best policy. If you haven’t already done so, talk to your friend about your concerns concerning their drug/alcohol abuse. Tell them that you believe they’re addicted and that you want to help in any way you can.

If they continue to use (which is likely), let them know that you plan to tell their family and get as many people involved to help as possible. Often an intervention with family and friends can get the addict into treatment.

Work with their family and find a treatment center that has an interventionist available. Work with the interventionist and get your friend into treatment. That is their best hope for recovery.

Remember, addiction is a disease of the brain that gets control of the addict making it VERY difficult to stop using. Also remember, if left untreated, addiction is a fatal disease.
