Hello, Are Cigarettes considered a drug too?

Does your organization consider cigarettes as a drug? I’ve tried everything from prayer to hypnosis, from prescriptions, patches, gum, etc. It’s like a cloud that won’t go away, and I want to live!!! I want to quit today, like I have for the last 8 years. HELP me please.

Nicotine is a HIGHLY addictive drug.

by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Shari,

Nicotine is is HIGHLY addictive drug that is often very hard to stop using. Like any drug addiction, nicotine addiction is a disease that attacks the brain and convinces us that we must use. Also, like any other drug addiction, each of us is unique and quitting can be much harder for some then for others.

Addiction is characterized by relapse. Most people who successfully stop smoking have tried to quit hundreds of times but have relapsed and started again.

I would recommend you try a 12-step based program called Nicotine Anonymous. Their website is:

http://www.nicotine-anonymous.org/

A 12 step approach helps us to understand our emotional and spiritual needs and allows us to seek our higher power for support. By working the 12 steps with others who are struggling with this difficult addiction, we can gain the strength necessary to finally quit for good.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that cigarettes aren’t a deadly drug because they most certainly are.

Good Luck,

Debbie
