Al-anon will give group support with daughter’s addiction

by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Julie,

Because your daughter has two addictions her treatment will be more difficult. I would recommend you and your husband begin attending Al-anon meetings in your area at least three times a week. Al-anon will help you to understand what your daughter is dealing with and learn tools to help her without helping her to stay addicted.

Be sure to work the 12-steps at the Al-anon meetings and to find a sponsor who has helped a child through their addiction. Going multiple times per week will get you up to speed quickly, because, as I’m sure you know, time is of the essence for your daughter.

Also, try to let your daughter know that you are going to meetings and encourage her to go with you. Also, tell what you’re learning about with the 12 steps. Often your daughter may become willing to go to AA if you go with her to help her to get started.

Here is the Al-anon meeting I found in Bournemouth:

Bournemouth
Thursday 19:45
Location: Salvation Army House, 107 Palmerston Road, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH1 4HT England

Disabled access

Notes: Opposite Salvation Army Hall. Doors open at 7.30 pm. The meeting is on the ground floor.

There are also meetings in Birdport, Christchurch, Dorchester, Poole, and Weymouth

Here is the web page you can use to find these meetings:

http://www.al-anonuk.org.uk/meetings/

Just enter your location and it will show you the Al-anon meetings that are closest to you.

Try different meetings until you find meetings that are working the 12-steps and where you feel comfortable and supported.

Good Luck,

Debbie
