Detox, treatment and recovery program needed

by: Debbie Wicker

Hello Michael,

Getting help for prescription drug abuse involves three major processes.

1. Detoxification

This is the process that cleans out your body and brain of all the chemical substances you’re abusing. This must be medically supervised to avoid complications and to manage any problems that occur.

2. Treatment is the next step

This is the process that treats the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual issues caused by the abuse. Drug abuse attacks the brain and changes the brain chemistry so radically that many people become unrecognizable as themselves.

The purpose of treatment is to help get the real person back from the control of the drugs and re-integrate the individual back into their life without getting them back into the part of their life that was involved in the abuse.

Treatment needs to be tailored for the individual and is most successful if some part of if is in-patient. The purpose of the initial stages of treatment is to try to avoid relapse. But is the person does relapse, don’t give up, relapse have been shown to be part of the disease.

3. 12 Step program

The last step can really start even while the person is still using. The person needs to get into a 12 step program like AA, NA or Celebrate Recovery help at many local churches. Because drug abuse attacks body, mind and spirit all three MUST be addressed to recover from it. Skip any of the three and relapse is almost guaranteed.

Go to local meetings 90 meetings in 90 days if possible and make sure to go to meetings that are WORKING the steps. Continually going through the 12 steps has been proven to be one of the BEST methods for drug abuse recovery for the long run.

Good Luck and God Bless!
