Your son is going to need a lot of support when he gets out, as it is not an easy task to be completely compliant with everything the authorities require, even if you try hard to do everything they ask. Hopefully he got some treatment when he was incarcerated, but I am not assuming he did.
You can start now to research treatment facilities in your area, as an untreated heroin user is in serious jeopardy of relapse. There are drugs in prison, and even if he wasn’t using he still has the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and he’ll be very tempted to go right back to his dealer and get some heroin as soon as he gets out.
The lure of the drug is powerful and without treatment he does not have the tools necessary to cope with the temptations. The most likely thing he will do is start using again. Your family doctor might give you some advice on where your son can get treatment, or you can get recommendations from a local hospital.
Your son needs treatment to help him rebuild his life and learn to live productively. The drug culture cares nothing about family, career, community involvement or any other worthwhile endeavor. They care about getting high, that’s it. That’s why families are torn apart, children are put into foster care and why people get arrested over and over again. He has to learn how to live a healthy and productive lifestyle.
Give Al-anon a call and allow them to help you understand your son’s experience. They have moms just like you who have gone through the same kind of agony you are going through right now. They want to help, but don’t know how.
Let someone who has walked down the path help you. The rest of the family probably doesn’t understand why somebody would risk trouble by using heroin, so you need to understand where your son is coming from and why he uses.
