Is there some way I can get a family member off drugs?

This is cocaine abuse…. he is out of touch with everyone in the family for a year and has left his wife 6 months ago… he is losing his business and has spent a tremendous amount of money in a year… the family doesn’t want him to lose everything and wants him to have some quality of life. we don’t want him to end up in jail…no treatment has been tried, it would be hard to do an intervention as he hides out from everyone and is very hard to locate. What can we do?

Intervention is likely your best option

Your family member needs treatment otherwise a good outcome is HIGHLY unlikely. You will need to enlist the support of a professional interventionist. A professional will be able to come in and assess the situation hopefully creating a plan to get the addict to go to treatment. Don’t try to do it without professional support because you will likely do more harm than good.

To find a good interventionist in your area I recommend you call your doctor or local hospital and explain the situation. Ask them for a referral to a good treatment center in your area. Then call the treatment center and go in and meet with them. They will almost always have a professional interventionist on staff to help you get your family member into treatment.

Getting them into treatment is only the first step. The addict must also begin the 12 step program and LEARN how to work the steps and rebuild their life. You and the other members of your family should attend Al-anon meetings regularly so you know how to help when the addict is released from treatment.

Good Luck!
