My brother has been a drug addict since he was a teenager

by Theresa

(South Africa)

My brother is a drug addict and is in hospital. He was in ICU for 9 days for an injury to his head. He needed 4 pints of blood and nearly died.

The doctor tested his blood for drugs but found no trace of drugs. But, my brother says he thinks he used the drug called “G”, and that this drug cannot be traced with normal tests for drugs. He unfortunately does not realize how serious this is, and now he is talking about going back to using the weed.

He also says he cannot remember what happened to him. We want to help him, but we are not sure what to do.

Some research shows the younger we start using the likely we are to become addicted.

Dear Theresa,

I’m so sorry that you’re feeling so desperate about your brother’s addiction. It sounds like he started using when he was very young and is having difficulty distinguishing what is good for him and what is not.

Addiction attacks our brain, and when we start using young, often the reasoning part of our brain doesn’t develop as it should. The good news is that when we stop using, our brain will begin to develop and can regain much of the reasoning ability we would have had without the drug abuse.

Your brother likely needs to go into a treatment program for addiction before he has a chance to start using again. Getting him there will probably be challenging because his brain is convincing him that all he needs is to use his drug of choice to feel good again.

Please consider joining Al-anon today to learn about the resources available in your area to help your brother. Go to meetings at least three times a week and let them help you decide the best approach for helping your brother without enabling his addiction is ANY way. Learn how to LOVE him but HATE his addiction.

Good Luck,

Debbie
