My son is totally out of control at 37?

by Tina

My son has been in and out of rehab and still relapses. I feel he needs another intervention with his alcohol abuse? It seems that if he’s not doing drugs he thinks it’s OK to drink. His life is out of control at age 37!

Don’t give up on your son, relapse is part of the recovery process

Dear Tina,

I can only imagine how much you have suffered with your son’s addiction. Drugs and alcohol can get a hold of a person and not let go. Alcohol is OFTEN the most difficult addiction to end. No one knows for sure why, but many many people can end other addictions but remain addicted to alcohol.

Doing an intervention for his alcohol addiction is a very good idea. Just because he has been in and out of treatment don’t assume treatment won’t help him.

When addicted to multiple substances it usually takes many tries before the addict can stop using. Addiction is a horrific and complex disease that will take all of the will that both of you have to overcome.

I recommend you immediately begin going to Al-anon meetings and Open AA meetings at least three times a week. Begin working the steps and you will be MUCH better positioned to really help your son to end his alcoholism.

Find a good sponsor and have them help you to plan your son’s intervention. Try to get your son to go with you to meetings. If you both go the research has shown a MUCH higher recovery rate for the addict.

Good Luck!

Debbie
