Need help to understand addiction?

by Marisela

Where can I seek help for me so that I can understand a person with a drug addiction and to get the help I need to learn how to leave this relationship?

Lots of support available

by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Marisela,

Understanding a person with addiction can be very difficult and leaving them even more difficult. I am very sorry you’re in such a sad circumstance.

I have two recommendations for you. The first is that many, many churches have outstanding support programs for those struggling with addiction and for the loved ones of the addict. I would start by checking the churches near to you and you may be surprised as to what is available.

Al-anon and Celebrate Recovery are two excellent programs offered at churches. You can also find Al-anon programs with NA and AA meetings, which are also an excellent source of information.

The reason I generally suggest going to local churches is because in my experience they have VERY safe environments and they should have all of the resources and support you need.

I would also suggest you read “Getting Them Sober”, a book written on this topic by Toby Rice Drews that outlines all of the issues of living with addiction and what you options are for leaving.

Good Luck!

Debbie
