Need to find meetings in Minneapolis?

by Ann

Hi,

I am trying to find an Al-anon meeting near me. I have a grown son who has been using drugs for many years and is indicating he needs help to stop.

I have been trying for a few years now to help him but need more support and insight.

We are in the Minneapolis 55443 zip code.

Thank you.

Dear Ann,

So glad your son wants help and may be willing to get the treatment he needs.

Here is a link to a webpage that lists the Al-anon meetings in your area:

I recommend trying meetings at churches or hospitals first, they’re usually much more well organized and supportive.

Because Al-anon is run totally by volunteers there is a great deal a variance between meetings and you should go to a few until you find meetings you like and are comfortable in. I would not include your son initially, until you’ve attended the meetings and know that they are in a good environment for him.

Some meetings are run by independent groups and they prey on the addict rather then helping them. That’s why it’s critical that you attend the meetings first and make sure that they are in a healthy and productive environment for you and your son.

Once you’ve found a few meetings you like, encourage him to come with you and to start working the 12 steps and finding a sponsor. The 12 steps can be very useful for each of you if you’re willing to put the work into the steps. They work if you work them!

Good Luck,

Debbie
