Addiction is often a HUGE destroyer of families and marriages.

by: Debbie Wicker

Dear John,

Each Al-anon meeting is different but most support families struggling with either drug or alcohol addiction. I recommend that you visit a few meetings in your area to find a meeting where you receive the support you’re looking for.

Addiction often destroys families and marriages because the addict changes into a person capable of any lie or action to get their drug of choice. Often one spouse sees what’s happening, wants to avoid enabling the addiction and making it worse. While the other spouse is unwilling to let the addict experience the full consequences of their choices and ends up actually supporting and enabling the addiction.

This often causes HUGE conflicts in the marriage, irreconcilable differences between the husband and wife develop and they end up splitting up. It sometimes feels like the addict wins, but of-course ultimately, the addict never wins.

Al-anon is a wonderful place to work through all of these issues and to get the healing and support needed during this very difficult and challenging transition.

Good luck,

Debbie
