Percocet Abuse

by Kate
(New York)

I'm going through a horrible divorce, what scares me the most is the behavior of a Percocet abuser. When I decided I had enough my daughter was 2 and my son 1. I can't understand how the government allows this to go on. It's literally walking into a pharmacy with a prescription and to a person who is abusing the dosage it's not a pain killer it becomes a synthetic heroin.

This is such an epidemic they all buy scripts from each other. I watched him and his friends walk into pain management centers for pain killers---what pain everyone is home smoking weed collecting unemployment because the unions threw them out. The doctors and pharmacies don't care they're getting paid by insurance companies.

The amount of Percocet and Roxicet in Staten Island and Brooklyn is disgusting. I have a good idea---if our unemployment rate is high why doesn't the government hire more officials to crack down on this, it's not hard to pin these people out raspy voice pinned out pupils and the inability to sit for more than a minute.

I really wish the government could pass a law that if you abuse these pain medicines you are classified as a drug addict, maybe then fathers like him couldn't win joint custody.

Terrible Burden
by: Ned Wicker

What a terrible burden for a young person to bear, watching your mother decline. I can't imagine your feelings of helplessness, but you can be an agent of change. Please consider going to Al-anon/Al-ateen meetings and get some support for yourself. They understand your situation as so many of their members have experienced the very same thing.

It's hard to understand why your mother, who is probably a very good person, can fall into such a dreadful state. It happened. It wasn't her choice. Things just got out of hand.

You can also go to your family, your grandparents, aunts, uncles and get the family to work together to help her. Get everybody involved. Addiction is a family disease, so all members are needed to effect a good solution.

You can also research local treatment centers and see if you can begin to make an arrangement. But first things first.

Make the call to Al-anon/Al-Ateen.

Mothers on percocets
by: Anonymous

My mother has 3 children, me age 18, my sister age 14, and my brother is 10. I don't know where she went wrong with managing her pills. One day she was fine, happy, and a good mother. The next day we were homeless begging family members if we could stay with them. My mother was always a good mom. Always put us before herself.

But, now her whole entire life revloves around percocets. When she does not have this damn drug in her she will sleep for days upon days. If someone were to wake her up all hell would break loose. And ofcourse no one really knows what is wrong her besides me and my little sister.

A 14 year old girl should not be worrying about if her mother is going to wake up today or if the house is going to remain the way it has been for the past week.

A 14 year old girl should be worrying about her friends and going to the mall. When my mother is on percs it's like she is completely "normal" but she is actually like a robot. She is up and cleaning, cooking, doing what ever she has to do but when she speaks to you its very monotone like a robot.

Every week or so we get into fights about these pills but she always denys taking them. I heard a person can only be helped if they help themselves, why doesn't she want to help herself?

If she sees her children crying, starving and begging her to stop, why doesn't she? I just don't understand. If she would just come out and admit it to everyone that she has a problem I will devote my life in helping her become clean.

But until then all I can do is stand by and watch her whither away and be the mother figure that she once was...

Percocet Abuse

Hi - Thanks for sharing your story and your frustrations. I totally agree with your hate of abuse of prescriptions drugs. My son has probably used just about every drug there is. He is 27 years old and in jail. It all causes so much heartbreak and destruction. Now he's finally saying he wants to straighten out his life so I hope he does.

In the mean time I am going to Al Anon meetings (for families and friends of alcoholics and drug addicts)and they help me immensely. There you meet others with the same or similar situations as yourself-I highly recommend you go to one.

Also, I see a counselor, talk to my minister and see a physician's assistant. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! I think it would help you to get some support for yourself.

The prescription drug abuse is really out of control in our country. I've seen it, too, firsthand. I know some doctors that seem to be very careful with what they prescribe but I'm sure there are plenty of others that aren't and they should be stopped. I don't know what we can do except to write our assembly people, etc..

Best wishes to you and I will pray for you and your kids. I hope I've helped you in some way-Lynette

Excess Is Human
by: Ned Wicker

Kate,
I hear your frustration and I share your outrage. People are always going to stretch the limits. Abuse of pain medication is rampant in America. The addicts want the high and the manufacturers want to sell the pills. Doctors get paid for prescribing. It's out of control. The laws must change. Greed is driving this terrible tragedy. As long as people can get rich...
