Dear Annette,

So very sorry that your husband is using heroin. Suboxone is a mild opiate that is used by to doctors to lessen the negative effects of heroin withdrawal.

When Suboxone is used correctly (as prescribed by a doctor) it works to allow the addict to feel relatively normal as they withdraw from heroin. Suboxone is an opiate and can be abused as an opiate.

Also, you can use Suboxone and heroin together because they are both opiates, but that means your husband has relapsed and fully addicted again. Any use of heroin changes the brain back to as it was at the height of his addiction. Heroin addiction is a disease of the brain and ANY use puts the addict back a square one.

Hopefully, you’re attending Al-anon meetings so that you can learn as much as possible about your husband’s addiction. I also recommend that you find a female sponsor who has helped her husband through an addiction, and then work together to develop an action plan for you and your husband.

Good luck,

Debbie
