Trying to help a friend cope with his brother’s drug addiction?

by Nichole

Hello,

I live in Raleigh, NC and I am trying to help a friend cope with his brother’s drug addiction to pills and depression from losing his father. I would like to know which support groups are offered in my area that would be beneficial.

Thank you.

You can both attend Al-anon meetings to cope with the addiction.

Dear Nichole,

Coping with the drug addiction in a family member can be difficult and stressful. It is usually a good idea to seek support from others who have been down the path you’re friend is on.

The organization I would recommend is Al-anon. They have family support groups for those whose family member is addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. The idea is that your friend begins to go to Al-anon meetings and then gets his addicted brother to begin going with him to AA.

Often with the support of his brother, and attending AA, the addict will enter treatment and quit.

When attending Al-anon meetings it is important to for your friend to work the 12-step program and to find a sponsor. This will allow your friend to LEARN what his/her brother NEEDS to do to quit using drugs.

Here is information on an Al-anon meeting in your area:

AL-ANON/ALATEEN SERVICE OFFICE
3509 HAWORTH DRIVE SUITE 107
RALEIGH NC 27609
USA

Email: [email protected]

Phone: (919) 787-1653

Hope this helps!

Debbie
