Drug Abuse and Addiction -- What is Drug Addiction?

Drug addiction is a chronic disease affecting the brain, and everyone is unique. Drugs affect different people in different ways. One person can take and abuse drugs, yet never become addicted, while another may merely have one experience and is immediately hooked. Drug rehab centers help you whether you are abusing or actually addicted to drugs/alcohol.

Drug addiction is characterized by a person having to use the drug(s) repeatedly, regardless of the damage it does to:

- Their health

- Their family

- Their career

- Their relationships with friends and the community

Addiction is not limited to drugs and alcohol. People can be addicted to many things, such as food, gambling, shopping, or most anything that gets in the way of a healthy lifestyle. When things get out of hand, and people behave compulsively, regardless of the consequences.

When you are no longer in charge of your life, regardless of the triggering mechanism, you are addicted. The addiction can take over your entire life. Nothing else will matter.

Is there a cure?

The first question many people have about drug abuse and addiction is simply “Is there a cure?” The answer is, sadly, no. Once you have the compulsion to use the drug, you will always be addicted to it. There is currently no pill you can take to remove your cocaine addiction. In order to get a more complete understanding of why there is no cure, you first have to take a deeper look at addiction. This will help you to learn how to live with it.

What's the difference between Drug Abuse and Drug Addiction?

The next question generally asked is how can I tell drug abuse from drug addiction. That's a little more complicated.

Click here to learn the differences between drug abuse and drug addiction.

Drug addiction and abuse often creates a disease of the mind, body, and SPIRIT.

Let’s establish one important point of understanding Drug Abuse and Addiction. We are body, mind and spirit, and because of that, drug addiction is as much a disease of the spirit as it is of the body and mind. Unlike other chronic diseases, like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease, the spiritual component of drug addiction will play a major role in a person’s recovery.

Drug Abuse and Addiction harm many lives!

No place will help me!

by Theresa

There is no place to help you with drug addiction without a price. I have a terrible story and nobody will help unless there is money involved no matter how serious the problem is.

I have begged and begged for help with my daughter but nobody cares. Nobody is out there. Trust me, I've tried over and over.

Keep the Faith

Dear Theresa,

It sounds like you have tried everything. Just one question—have you gone to Al-anon and asked other parents about what you can do? It’s just a thought, but parents have a remarkable way of finding water in the rocks when they are pressed.

Many churches have drug programs and if your daughter is out of control and throwing her life away, you may consider going to law enforcement and asking for their help. Sometimes saving a person means having them arrested and confined.

Addiction is a terrible disease because unlike a broken leg, the patient doesn’t want treatment. Even if the patient does want treatment, there is no cure. Whatever it takes, my prayer for your daughter is that she receives the help she desperately needs. Please allow someone to help you as well. Call Al-anon.

O Really ???????

Well i happen to know a place located in Cincinnati Ohio that is free !!! It is called city gospel mission. Look them up on-line or call them. They have programs for men and women!! the number is: 513-241-5525.

Ask them about how to get you to talk with someone in the woman's program. It might be a long drive but your kids life is at stake and besides she needs to get away from her old surroundings for a while.

Go a head and give it a try. Trust me i went through the men's program a couple years ago and my life has never been the same since... for the good. It is faith based. Good luck and God bless. Now let's see what you do with the chance at getting some help !!!

Thank-you!

My 80 year old mom lives with me who is very sick that I feel like my daughter helped her health spiral downhill. I also have a 8 year old granddaughter who lives with me and I try to hide everything from her because she is too depressed. I've never experienced anything like my heroin daughter and I am completely at a loss, but I will keep trying.

Thank you again.
