According to SAMSA “Results from the 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) indicate that about 15 million people aged 12 or older used prescription drugs non-medically in the past year, and 6.5 million did so in the past month.

“This issue is a growing national problem in the United States. Prescription drugs are misused and abused more often than any other drug, except marijuana and alcohol. This growth is fueled by misperceptions about prescription drug safety, and increasing availability.”

The formal definition of addiction is very well described by the APA as “Addiction is a complex condition, a brain disease that is manifested by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequence. People with addiction often have an intense focus on using a certain substance(s), such as alcohol or drugs, to the point that it takes over their life. They keep using alcohol or a drug even when they know it will cause problems. Yet a number of effective treatments are available and people can recover from addiction and lead normal, productive lives.”

Each of is unique and our addiction symptoms will be different, but here are some common ways that addiction can start. Here are the symptoms to look for in yourself or others:

1. Tolerance begins: Need more pain pills to gain the same level of pain support. Many people will say: “These pills aren't working anymore I need more to manage my pain.” That is a major symptom of pain pill addiction. Addiction is a disease of the brain, and as we start to become addicted our brain convinces us that we need more pills to get rid of our pain. Our brain adjusts to our current level of pills, essentially the pills stop working until we take more. We are developing tolerance, meaning we need to take more and more to get the same affect.

2. Ignore negative consequences: We take more and more pills even if there are negative consequences. We begin to loss control and MUST take our pills.

3. Crave drug: We begin to crave the drug when we aren't using it. We need our pills and we need them NOW! We become willing to do almost anything to get the pills that our brain is convincing we must have.

4. Negative Social Effects: We begin to fight with our loved ones about how many pills we're taking. They try to stop us but no matter what they say or do we take the pills we want anyway.

5. Harmful Actions: We use even when we need to drive and we know the pills will impair our driving ability.

If you're beginning to experience these issues with your pain pills that please seek help from your doctor to avoid becoming addicted.

and Finally Remember:

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."
- Matthew 7:7-8
