Ending the stigma society has about addiction!

Please read this. I need help so I can help others.

Hello, my name is McKayla. Thank you for reading this. I am going to put an end to the stigma society has put on addiction. I am from Skidmore, Tx. My mom is a recovering drug addict. I have seen addiction up close and personal and I have seen recovery up close and personal.

I know that this disease affects more than just the addict. Unless we can get addicts into treatment they will continue to die and their loved ones to suffer. I believe that we have to remove the stigma from the word addiction in order to make it easier on addicts to seek help. Once in treatment we can help them get to the root of why they self medicated and treat them properly.

We need to get to the root of why they self medicate. We have to find the underlying mental disorder they are suffering from. The same disorders that millions of people get treatment for without shame.

Depression, anxiety, low self esteem, and PTSD and a host of other mental disorders addicts are suffering from and choosing to self medicate. I am enrolling in the nursing program at my local community college. Once I am in the medical profession I plan to use my voice to change the way addicts are perceived.

I can and I WILL remove the stigma placed on addiction so that another million people will not die of this disease. I was wondering if your foundation could help me out financially in any way. I am unable to get financial aid and I was not awarded any of the scholarships I applied for.

All I want to do is help people like my mom. I have seen what recovery can do for an addict and those who love them. I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask. I'm just trying to find a way to get in college so I can save millions of people. I can provide you with any information you need.

Please, if there is any way you could help me financially, or just point me in the right direction for some help I would greatly appreciate it. I only want to help millions who are suffering. I’m sure I will be rejected, but I’m trying anyway because I WILL make a difference.

Thank you so much for your time if you are still reading this.

P.S. I promise you, I WILL remove the stigma society has put on addiction. I will never give up!!

I've applied to everything.
by: Anonymous

Yes ma’am, I have applied for any and everything available to me. Unfortunately, I have been denied. My community service was going to NA meetings with my mom and watching people’s children so that they could concentrate more on the message.

Since it is NA and it’s anonymous, I didn’t include it on any applications and I’m sure the lack of community service was why I was not picked. I know that in actuality I was performing a great community service. So if I have to find alternate ways to help me pay for college, I am willing to do so.

Thank you again,

You go girl!

Dear McKayla,

Wow, I'm so impressed with what you've written and I completely agree with you. Addiction is often about self-medicating and untreated mental health issues. Ending the stigma and allowing the underlying issues to receive treatment is a great way to help those addicted and their families.

We're not a foundation and we have no way to help you financially, but I have posted your request on our website and hope someone will contact you with ideas on how to help.

Have you applied for student loans through FAFSA, which is the federal student loan program. Everyone is eligible and this may be a good way for you to get the education you need to make a difference.

Good luck,
