Drug abuse especially with couples is a VERY complex problem.
by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Paula,

Drug addiction is a disease of the brain that often stops us from making rational decisions about our drug use. We couples are involved it gets even more difficult because, often, each "triggers" the other to use.

You likely need to get your son to admit that he has a problem and be willing to get treatment for it. He's not likely to do on his own. He has to become motivated to change.

- Can you figure out why he is using?

- Is there something in his life that he struggles with?

- Does he have ANY understanding of the harm he is causing himself by using?

- Is he willing to put together a list of the true PROS and CONS of using?

These are questions that, if he would honestly answer them, might help him to understand that he needs help and must stop using ASAP.

Please consider joining Al-anon and working the 12 steps to learn as much as you can about addiction and how to create a plan to help your son. Working the 12 steps should give you some insight into what your son needs to do to stop using drugs.

Debbie
