Individual Therapy Proves Beneficial to Addiction Recovery Efforts

by Becca

When looking for an alcohol or drug rehab program, one thing you'll find in common at most facilities is individual therapy as a treatment for addiction recovery. There is a general belief that whether addiction was brought on by a traumatic experience, childhood upbringing, dramatic life change, or an underlying mental health issue, that cognitive behavioral therapies and other methods used by therapists can help to treat addiction and reduce the likelihood of relapse. Talking with a trained professional on a weekly basis helps rehab participants in the following ways:

* Unbiased Support - It can be hard for someone struggling with addiction to open up to another person. As abusing substances or engaging in other addictive behaviors is viewed as negative in society, they may feel frightened or even judged when they come forward. A therapist provides another option. Coming from a place of support and legally bound by contract not to share conversations had, many feel more comfortable opening up to a therapist. This process helps identify the root of the problem and develop an individual recovery plan geared towards the patient's specific needs.

* Discover Inspiration to Change - In order to recover from addiction and remain on the straight and narrow path, it is first important for addicts to find a purpose or reason for wanting to change. This inspiration is what will drive them throughout the rehab from drugs and beyond. Therapists take the first few sessions to get to know their clients to help them determine a reason for making positive life changes. This could be for their health, significant other, children, or simply being tired of the path they're on.

* Goal Setting and Accountability - Once they've discovered the source of importance or purpose, they are more inclined to set actionable goals and work towards them. Now feeling empowered, they will start to create a game plan towards change as their therapist helps them to remain accountable. The regular meetings help them to assess their actions, celebrate their accomplishments, and encourage forward movement on remaining sober. This self-reliance builds confidence proving that they don't need to rely on others to make necessary changes in their own lives.

* Positive Thinking Skills - Lack of self-love and self-confidence can keep addicts in a depressed state which hinders their growth and weakens their ability to remain sober. Therapists work with rehab clients to identify those negative thoughts and turn them into positive ones. Learning how to replace the good with the bad as well as setting positive goals and keeping them help to build their confidence allowing them to accomplish even more and avoid going back to that dark place.

* Relapse Avoidance Techniques - Therapists work with their clients to assist them in avoiding relapse. This requires first determining the root or cause of their addiction as identifying triggers. Once these factors are determined, they work to find techniques or lifestyle changes participants can try on a short and long-term basis to avoid abusing substances after they've completed the program.

It has been proven time and time again that individual therapy is a crucial component to treating addiction. Therapists work with clients on a one-on-one basis to help them truly understand who they are and how they became an addict. They then provide them with tools to overcome those challenges by improving self-esteem, setting goals, and retraining those negative thoughts. As participants are aware of their triggers, feel inspired to change, know how to think more positively, and achieve their goals, they are less inclined to relapse and more determined to remain sober. If you or someone you know is suffering from addiction, be sure to look for a rehab program that offers individual counseling for improved success.
