Friend Using Cocaine?

by Joycelyn

Hello, I have this friend who takes cocaine and I don’t like it. What advice and what things I should buy for the friend to make it easier on him.

Friend using cocaine?

Dear Jocelyn,

Thanks for writing. I think that the only thing you can do for your friend is to ask them to get help and do one of the following:

1. Go to an Alcoholics Anonymous (they talk about drug use, too) or a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. There they will meet others in the same or similar situation as themselves and that can be extremely helpful.

2. Go to a Drug and Alcohol counselor

3. Go to a medical doctor – they can steer them in the right direction – that’s what I did when I wanted to stop drinking and it helped immensely (I have not drank for 25 years)

4. Talk to a clergy

You can find the meetings mentioned above on the internet.

If they do NOT want to get help there is really not anything you can do for them. However, you can get support for yourself by going to an Al Anon meeting-they are for friends and families of alcoholics and drug addicts. Get some support for yourself! YOU ARE NOT ALONE in this situation.

I will pray for you and your friend-Lynette

Protect Yourself

Joycelyn,

Lynette has given you some good direction, but I have one other point to add. If you are just a friend to the cocaine user, I’d say be a friend and learn how to best help.

If you and he are romantically attached, you need to understand that you are in for a long fight. Long after detox and treatment, the cravings for cocaine continue.

Depending on the stage of his disease, he is probably going to go through some rough times and you need to understand that in order for you to have any hope for a good relationship with him, he needs to be clean and sober.

Guard yourself and be smart. He needs to take care of business and you need to make sure he does.
