Relapse part of disease of addiction
by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Donna,

Many people will say that heroin use is characterized by relapse. An addict uses heroin, begins to experience withdrawal symptoms and then is compelled to use again, i.e. relapse.

So one could argue that the relapse rate for heroin addiction is 100%. The disease of heroin addiction is defined by relapse because no one wants to continue to use heroin.

Another interesting statistic about heroin addiction is that once addicted only 30% of addicts recover from it, the rest die from the disease, because they OD, commit suicide or from a car accident.

I would c]direct you to the NIDA site:

http://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/heroin

It is a great site for information about heroin addiction.

Debbie
