My best friend is asking me for help

by Val

(Las Vegas, NV)

My best friend likes to take pain killers, any kind she can get her hands on. She knows that she needs to stop, she’s afraid of the withdraws, getting sick and an upset stomach.

She asked for help. How to stop! How can I help her? She’s a great girl, super funny, but she thinks she needs to drink to be good and funny and be able to work.

Get her into treatment ASAP!

by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Val,

Taking pain pills is equivalent to shooting heroin. Pain pills are an opiate just like heroin and opiate addiction is often FATAL!

It sounds like your friend my be alcohol and opiate addicted and she needs to get treatment for both. I recommend that you take her to an ER at any hospital in Las Vegas. Let the doctor know that you friend is opiate and alcohol addicted and ask for support to help her to go through the withdrawal process for both.

Alcohol withdrawal can be life threatening so it is important that she get medical support to go through the withdrawal process.

Then ask the doctor to recommend a treatment program for her. Inpatient is her best bet because otherwise she is likely to relapse and the treatment won’t work.

Ask the social workers at the hospital to match her health insurance to the treatment centers that take her insurance. If she doesn’t have health insurance she may be eligible for Medicaid and the social workers should be able to to process her application.

You should also start going to Al-anon meetings to learn about your friends addiction and what it will take for her to get the treatment she needs.

She should also should start attending DAILY AA or NA meetings to learn the 12 steps so she can learn how to live a happy, joyous and free life without addiction/alcoholism.

Good Luck!

Debbie
