Mother and boyfriend are addicts?

by Taylour

I have never personally dealt with addiction. My mother was a drug addict and alcoholic my entire child hood, and in the last year I’ve come to terms with the fact that my boyfriend is an addict as well.

I want a better understanding of addiction to try to and help my boyfriend while he is on his path to recovery without resentment due my experience with my mother.

Is the place to do that? Can you help me?

Al-anon is set up to help those in your situation

Dear Taylour,

I am so very sorry that addiction has been such a large part of your life. You are certainly asking the correct questions:

1. How can you learn bout addiction so that you can understand it?

2. How can you help my boyfriend to end his addiction and encourage him on the path to recovery?

3. How can you avoid resentments with your boyfriend that come from your experience with your mother?

Al-anon is the program that was created to help you answer these questions. I would recommend you attend at least three meetings a week, begin to work the 12 steps, and find a good sponsor who has successfully helped their boyfriend recover from addiction.

Working the steps will help you to answers your questions and hopefully allow you to move forward with your life. Try as many meetings as necessary until you find meetings where you feel comfortable and where they are working the steps. Also, find a good female sponsor to give you the support you need.

Good luck!

Debbie
