Addiction and general anesthetic?

Get The Facts Going In

Barbara,

There has been concern about using anesthesia during rapid opioid detoxification. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, rapid detox is expensive, unproven and potentially dangerous.

The use of Buprenorphine and Naltrexone Induction, rather than the anesthetic, seems to be more mainstream.

Generally speaking, a thorough medical workup prior to a surgical procedure, screening for potential drug addiction tendencies, should suffice in insuring against the possibility of abuse and dependency.
