Alcoholic and opiate

Alcoholic and addicted to pain killer? What to do?

Alternatives

by: Ned Wicker

The most important thing to do is talk to your doctor. There are alternative forms of pain management, but anything you do should be under the direct, watchful eye of a physician who is aware of your alcohol use disorder.

Obviously the two do not mix and are deadly in combination, so you have a choice to make.

If you are drinking, it is not uncommon for medical professionals to deal with that first before they try to help you with your pain.

If you are in recovery and trying to avoid any drugs at all, that is a separate issue. In any case, have that conversation and be completely open and honest.

Also, seriously consider attending local AA meetings. Many people there have been in your situation and should have ideas for you of the best course of action.
