What To Do

My friend of about 12 years is an alcoholic and drug addict. He has been in treatment before but has not been able to stay clean and sober.

I was wondering what would be anybody’s advice when the addict has not been heard from in about three or four days? Their cell phone is not on and you are living every second with the fear that they are lying somewhere alone or even dead. Is the tough love method the way to go, or should a missing persons report be filed?

I’m not really even sure where I would look for him, but I am completely distraught over this. Please give some advice. What should I do?

Intercession

If your friend has not been in contact with anyone and has not shown up at work, or answered his door, you have good reason to believe something might be wrong.

Has his family said anything?

If he has family I would talk to them and maybe get some help from the police. That might seem heavy handed to you, but I recall being in the emergency room comforting a mother who had just lost her son to an overdose. The man died of exposure to the harsh elements and could have been saved had anyone said something.

I am sensing your friend is out of control and he needs help. Go ahead and force the issue.

Better that then doing nothing.
