Heroin

My son he is 27 is now in the hospital from a abscess in his upper leg from injections.

I was not looking at the signs: Always needing money from me and my husband etc…

I am really scared and disgusted with my self, for not going with my gut feeling.

What should I do now to heal my family?

You’re asking exactly the right question!

How can you help your family is EXACTLY the right question. Addiction is a family disease and everyone in the family needs support and information to get through the process.

Your son needs to go into treatment for his addiction as he leaves the hospital. Heroin addiction is one of the most difficult addictions to break and the best option for your son is inpatient treatment for at least three months, preferably six months. He should then move to a halfway house where they drug test him to make sure that he hasn’t relapsed.

He also needs to begin going to AA or NA meetings DAILY to learn about his addiction and work the 12 step program.

This is where you and the rest of the family come in. Everyone in the family needs to begin going to Al-anon meeting and open AA/NA with your son. You all need to work the 12 steps and find a sponsor who has been where you are.

Research has show that if the family works the steps then the addict is SIGNIFICANTLY more likely to work the steps, to get a sponsor and recover from his addiction.

Heroin addiction is a disease of the brain and relapse is VERY common. You need to support your son as he fights this terrible disease. Al-anon will help teach your entire family to love the addict but to hate his addiction.
