My son is 22 and has hit a bad low and wants to kill himself… drinking daily, weed, coke, homeless. I need him to be sectioned or rehab as it is mentally killing me!

Have you tried calling the police?

Dear Chaleynne,

Wow, you and your son are in an awful situation. Alcohol and other drugs often cause terrible depression and can cause us to want to end it all. Suicidal thoughts are often a tell tale symptom of severe depression. Your son certainly needs a mental health intervention to help him with his addiction and also with his depression.

I have two recommendations for you:

Please start going to Al-anon meetings today and working the 12 steps so that you can learn as much as you can about the disease of addiction. The more we know about the enemy we are confronting the stronger and better we’ll be at fighting it.

It’s easy to find meetings in your area, just do a google search on Al-anon and then the city and state you’d like to attend meetings in.

Then, consider calling the police and asking for their help to get your son committed to a mental health hospital for detox and rehab. If you can convince them that your son is trying to harm himself they will commit him and then you should be able to get him the mental health support he so desperately needs.
