I fear for the life of my brother!

by Karen

I am writing cause I fear for the life of my brother. He is 29 years old and uses anything he can get his hands on. He pops pills, uses heroin, smokes pot, and has used coke. He also has a girlfriend, Lizzie, who is a major pill popper.

I lost one brother (19 yrs. old) in January 2010 and I don’t want to lose another. They have 2 children. Please I need help. He doesn’t have insurance. PLEASE…I’m a very desperate sister. I don’t want my kids to lose another Uncle, or his kids lose their Daddy or Mommy.

A Couple of Ideas

Dear Karen,

What a horrible position to be in, but there is hope. For starters, you need to get some support for yourself and Al-Anon is a great place to start. They are all about helping people just like you, and believe me, they have been through it all.

You can also consult with a local drug treatment center and get their take on it, but you must understand that your brother and his wife will deny anything is wrong. They’ll say that they don’t have a problem, you do. Of course they are wrong!

You can approach them with love and compassion and they will accuse you of being the devil, so don’t expect love and kisses. This might be harsh, but their drug use is a danger to the children, a real and legitimate danger.

Children’s Social Services would not look kindly on addicts raising children. That is another possible approach to getting them help. They both need treatment. Make the call.
