Dear Christy,

It’s difficult to watch your son self-destruct, especially since he’s been through programs before. However, there are some steps you and he can take, outside of paying for treatment.

Does he go to AA or NA meetings? Their programs really work, if you allow them to work. It sounds like he goes to jail or goes to treatment, but nothing really changes.

He needs to look at himself and rebuild his life. A 12 Step program is designed to deal will all of the issues that are driving his insanity. You and your husband would benefit from Al-Anon, a support organization comprised of people just like you who want to help their family members who struggle with addiction. His ex-wife would also benefit from this group.

As long as he chooses to go down this path, there is only misery, but if he is willing to look at himself and do a little soul searching, there is great hope.
