LSD Addiction Facts
There are two types of addiction—physical and psychological. In the case of LSD, there is no potential for physical addiction, and unlike cocaine or heroin, or alcohol, it is not a drug that people do again right away.
However, people can get psychologically hooked on LSD, as the high people seek from LSD can be satisfying to them and they will want to repeat the experience.
The trouble with using LSD on a regular basis is the hallucinogenic effect of the drug can prevent, or at least make it highly improbably, that a person can even function or have a sense of reality.
Back when this drug was popular with young people, there were quiet places set aside for people to go if they were having a “bad trip,” places of calm, where there would be somebody to soothe and calm the person while they waited for the effects to wear off.
Another problem with LSD is that people will build up a tolerance to the drug, so what gave a person a “good trip” or a good high on one day will not necessarily be repeated the next. The original effects of the drug may go back to that first experience in a few days.
As for any psychological addiction, most people go off the drug on their own, without need for professional intervention. Users may partake regularly, but any craving or “seeking” associated with highly addictive drugs just is not the case with LSD. The tolerance built up for the drug will cause the user to take more and more drug to achieve the same effects.
The danger in taking more drug is not so much in becoming addicted, but in having a bad experience with the drug because it is unpredictable.
For example, even without taking the drug again, users can experience flashbacks. This usually happens to people who use hallucinogens regularly, or have some other mental or emotional issue that would contribute to the bad experience.
