Morphine was developed in Germany and came to the United States in the 1850’s.

It was heralded as a miracle drug that would control pain and not become addictive. Many Civil War soldiers developed an addiction.

German scientists worked hard to improve their find and came up with another drug that would do the job and not become addictive. Heroin was introduced.

The failed product was later outlawed. Since, other opioid drugs have been developed.

Hi-

1. Morphine is the principal constituent of opium and can range from 4-20 percent in concentration. Commercial opium is standardized to contain 10% morphine.

2. Opium comes from the opium poppy flower’s pod. Milky latex from the pod produces a variety of opiates including morphine and codeine.

3. Morphine is a highly addictive drug. It has one of the highest rates of relapse for all forms of drug addiction. If addicted, there are severe physical withdrawal symptoms as well as negative psychological effects.

I hope no one you know is abusing morphine. If they are they should see a medical doctor for help.
