Dear Matt,
One of the first things you can do is to call a local treatment center and speak to one of their counselors. Sometimes we get the wrong impression of what an intervention is and what our expectations should be, so it’s important to have that discussion first to have a clearer understanding.

Of course, members of AA and Al-Anon have walked down your path and know every rock in the road and every pothole, so for me this is an excellent place to turn to hear the straight story.

You can also talk to your own doctor, who may be able to recommend some resources for you, or speak to staffers from a local emergency department. They deal with drug and alcohol issues every day.

Finally, do not rule out the wisdom and experience of a local pastor or rabbi, who also deals with addiction issues from the spiritual side of the road. Many people ignore the spiritual, but it’s an important element in our well being.
