Very common problem
by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Emma,

Anxiety is a mood disorder that can occur for many reasons. Grief, loss, insecurity, low self-esteem and abuse are often reasons for anxiety. Anxiety can also be caused by a traumatic event like PTSD.

Anxiety often disrupts a person's life with worry and fear and makes even simple social and work situations unbearable. Panic attacks are on of the leading causes of ER visits and are VERY unpleasant.

Sadly, many people self-medicate anxiety with alcohol or drugs. This self-medication usually causes the anxiety to worsen and usually leads to sever depression as well.

I work with many patients in counseling that suffer from anxiety, panic attacks and it's often coupled with major depression. They do get better if they use proper medication and stay in counseling long enough to truly identify their problem and address it.

I hope that answers your question and please let me know if you have other concerns.

Debbie
