Synthetic Insanity

By Ned Wicker

The New York
Daily News had an item this morning that caught my attention.

It was about a couple who were shooting off
rounds in their back yard at imaginary gangsters.

The story by Anthony Bartkewicz mentioned
that they had a “bag of guns” and were firing rounds into the air, to scare of
the imaginary gangsters who were hiding underneath their porch.

The two were high on bath salts.

It seems that
bath salts are in the news again.

synthetic drug, and who knows what is in any particular batch, is known to
cause bizarre, violent and disgusting behavior and in the case of Phillip and
Donna Walls of Kings Mountain, N.C., it gave them a powerful hallucination or

Funny thing is, the story said
they had the presence of mind to call 911 to report the “intruders.”

After firing several shots, the Walls made their way next
door to break into the home of Richard and Debra Robinson.

Richard is a pastor and took action.

He talked to them calmly and they gave him
the guns.

“I was little afraid,
don’t get me wrong,” Robinson told WSOC-TV. “But even in that state of mind, he
had enough presence to ask me to pray for him.”

“They were delusional,”
Debra Robinson said. “They really thought somebody was out to kill them.”

The police
arrived and took them to a local hospital. They were later carted off to jail
and charged with breaking and entering and “going armed to the terror of the
people (Robinsons),” according to the Gaston Gazette.

The story went on to say that the couple had
a history of using bath salts, but that no bizarre behavior like this had
happened before.

This isn’t the
first time we’ve heard a story like this and it certainly isn’t going to be the

Sold under the guise as “bath
salts” some people call it synthetic marijuana, and smoke it as a legal
alternative to grass, but strange and dangerous things seem to happen

Many municipalities have
banned the stuff, but people still manage to find it.

Recently there was the story of the cannibal in Florida, who was finally
caught on a bridge by the police.

after report of people doing things that even Hollywood, in all of its violent sickness
can’t come up with.

Who is the villain

There’s plenty of blame to go

The couple that was smoking this
junk has to claim some responsibility for their decision to take “bath salts”
and smoke it.

Money is the ONLY goal

The people who sell this garbage know that the buyers are
going to abuse it, but that doesn’t matter as long as they can make money selling
it legally.

The people who make the
drug know exactly what they are doing and work hard to stay one step ahead of
the sheriff.

That is they will change the formula to make sure they are
within the law, but know knows what is really in any particular batch because
there is no FDA approval process.

Whose to blame?

Who is the

Human nature is the villain,
because all of us are willing to push the limits when we want something badly

Smoking bath salts is so
extremely stupid it defies logic, but some people call bath salts legal
marijuana and smoke it to achieve the same effect.

They get something other than the desired results, but what
the heck, it’s legal, isn’t it?

do crazy things.

People look for an
escape, or relaxation, or just a break from the routine of life or the
pressures of the day.

They look to
something to make them feel good.

think they need a substance to help them along, and they think they can handle
that substance and control everything.

It’s all a lie.

One of the most
fascinating aspects of the human experience is our ability to rationalize

I know some folks who firmly
believe that if they can’t drink alcohol at any function, they won’t have a
good time.

Every event in their life
becomes an excuse to drink, from a church picnic to a four year-old child’s
birthday party.

The couple in North
Carolina was obviously rationalizing their need to
smoke bath salts.

We need an excuse
because we need a reason to stretch the limits.

We make it all sound so natural, so reasonable.

They smoke marijuana for medicinal

They abuse prescription
medication, but hey, it’s medicine so it’s good for you, right?

Who knows what
was going through the mind of somebody whacked out on bath salts.

They have it all under control and they don’t
have a problem.

Tell that to the
neighbors after you break into their house at gunpoint, lamenting about
gangsters under your porch.
