Call your doctor or local hospital to start.

Starting an intervention is an excellent way to protect the safety of your family member and also the kids. The goal of an intervention is to get the drug addict into treatment so that they can stop using. Because addiction is a disease that attacks the brain, usually the addict is unwilling to go into treatment.

To plan an intervention you need to decide which treatment center is best for your family member. There are two things I would do to find the best treatment center for her.

First, I would call my doctor or local hospital and explain the situation and ask for their advice. Doctors and hospitals deal with addiction all of the time and generally can refer you to the best treatment center in the area given your unique situation. Call the treatment centers they recommend and find out if they will help you to do an intervention. Many treatment centers have professional interventionists on staff that will help you through the process.

Second, I would begin attending local Al-anon meetings ASAP so that I could learn as much about addiction as possible. Working the 12 steps and finding a sponsor at Al-anon allows us to understand all that we’re dealing with and to make a plan for how to help our loved one to end their addiction.

Good Luck,

Debbie
