Can I ask to discuss other addictions at our group meeting?

by Nancy

My group doesn’t allow any discussions on any thing but alcohol and CAL. Is it ok to mention other addictions? A lot of us have these in our family, but don’t know if it is ok.

The older members say nothing that isn’t alcohol related.

Finding the right group for the addiction your dealing with is important.

Dear Nancy,

This is a good question that many people have. Often people have a drug addiction and they wonder if AA will be a good fit for them. It is an excellent fit for them and they need to begin working the AA 12 step program immediately so that they can learn to manage their addiction.

AA is a support group set up for people who have a substance addiction but is not set up to handle other addictions i.e. food, gambling, sex, internet, shopping, etc. These are not appropriate topics for an AA meeting because they’re not substance related.

There are excellent support groups for most addictions and I would recommend you do a google search for meetings for other addictions in your area.

Also, some AA groups take over by “oldtimers” AA meetings and the meetings become more social than support group based. Try different meetings until you find meetings where they are working the 12 steps and are welcoming to new members who may have alcohol OR drug related issues.

Good luck,

Debbie
