I need help with my 20 year old son. I am considering an intervention.

Can you help?

Dear Karen,
Parents want to do the best for their children and I respect your concern and desire to get help for your son. Addiction is a family disease, so every member of the family needs to be involved in moving him towards treatment and recovery.

You can call a local drug and alcohol treatment center and get their counsel, or you might also try Al-Anon to receive help and support from other parents who know exactly what you are going through. Regardless of the path you choose, you need a plan and everybody needs to be on the same page, doing their part. You need help too, so do not avoid getting support and counsel. You will need strength for the days ahead. Pick up the phone and start calling.

Help for my son

Dear Karen,

I just wanted to let you know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

I think the best thing for you to do would be to go to an Al Anon meeting (for families and friends of alcoholics and drug addicts). My son has been struggling with drug and alcohol abuse for 13 years. Also, I am a recovering alcoholic and I have not drank for 25 years.

If your son would go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting or a Narcotics Anonymous meeting I think it would help him.

I go to Al Anon, see a counselor, talk to my minister and see a physician’s assistant. Also, I give every day over to God. All of these have helped me tremendously!

Please – get some support for yourself and don’t JUST think only of helping your son.

I will be praying for you and your son-Lynette
