I'm in recovery but I think my sister is using.

by Lauren

My sister is visiting me and is supposed to be in recovery from heroin. I have been sober for 3 years. I am seeing signs that she is using again.

What should I do?

Difficult question... no easy answer.
by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Lauren,

Wow this is a really tricky situation for you. I have many questions that I would ask to try to figure out the best solution for you.

1. Do you go to 12 step meetings regularly so that you have good support in your continued sobriety?

2. Do you have any other family members or loved ones that you could tell and that would support you as you confront your sister?

3. Are you concerned about relapse for yourself such that you need to stay away from your sister if she is using?

4. How long has your sister been in recovery and is she getting good support for her recovery?

Answering these questions should lead you to the best action for protecting your recovery but also trying to help your sister with hers.

You need a positive strategy for confronting your sister that is constructive for both of you and avoids harming either one of you further. Ideally you would be working the 12-steps and would work through this with your sponsor to get a supportive but outside prospective on the best course of action.

Good Luck,

Debbie
