Al-Anon a good Choice

by: Ned Wicker

Dear Bob,
Al-Anon is designed to help people like you, who desire to help someone they love. It’s not just the addict/alcoholic who needs help, but the family as well. Al-Anon’s members have been down the path you are on and understand your experience. As with any organization, there are good chapters and not so good chapters, so you may need to do a little research and testing before you land on one that fits well. But turning to Al-Anon is a great idea.

You may have to visit 5-6 different meetings until you find one that really suits you. Don’t give up, keep searching until you find a meeting that you feel comfortable in and meets your needs.

I was just speaking with someone yesterday who goes to weekly Al-non meetings and drives 40 miles each way because that’s the meeting that really met this person’s needs and has for the last 12 years.

All the best.

Nar-Anon is for the families of drug users

by: Anonymous

I come from a family where both alcohol and substance abuse have been a problem. For me, I found Nar-Anon very helpful because it focuses on issues relating to drug addiction that Al-Anon members cannot relate to.

Nar-Anon is for the families and friends of addicts. Definitely seek out Al-Anon if there are no Nar-Anon groups near you.

Both follow the 12 step program, encourage sponsorship and involvement in service.
