Is there a cure for cocaine addiction?

by Melissa
(LA, CA)

Hi, my brother has been using cocaine for about five years and recently went into rehab to quit.

Will he ever be cured of his addiction?

I know how hard he wants to be cured so that he never has to deal with this again.

Currently, there is no cure for cocaine addiction.

Dear Melissa,

The first question many people have about any drug addiction is: “Is there a cure for drug addiction?” The short answer is, sadly, no, once you are addicted to a drug you will always be addicted to it. Whether it's cocaine, heroin, or alcohol, once you MUST use the drug to feel normal you are addicted to it.

There is currently no pill you can take to remove your cocaine addiction. In order to get a more complete understanding of why there is no cure, you first have to take a deeper look at addiction to learn how to live with it.

Cocaine abuse causes permanent changes in brain chemistry

Because of the change in the brain’s chemistry and function, it’s very difficult for people who are addicted to stop using; that's what is so difficult about addiction. Most treatment centers have found that a combination of medications, along with behavioral therapy is the most effective way of helping the patient manage the disease of addiction.

But, if your brother begins using cocaine again, even if it's just one time, he will be back in his addiction immediately. Because of the permanent changes in his brain, he can never use cocaine again. That's why addiction relapse is such a problem.

There is no cure but there is always hope, I'm so glad your brother is finally getting the treatment he needs.

Good Luck,

Debbie
