Son completed detox and facility insisted continue treatment at specific facility?

by Isabel

(New Jersey)

The detox center refused to listen to the family about where their son should go after detox for further treatment. The detox center picked out the aftercare and insisted that he go there. They packed him up and a driver arrived and whisked him away without our input or approval although we are the ones who have the insurance coverage for our son. Is the detox center getting a kickback or a referral fee from the place they sent him to?

There can be financial incentives between detox center and treatment programs.

Dear Isabel,

There can be strong financial incentives between a detox center and a treatment center. Because it is your insurance paying the bill, you could call the insurance company and discuss the situation with them. Obviously, your son should be getting the best treatment available and you should be involved in that decision.

Have you researched other treatment centers that are covered by your insurance? I would recommend that you try to get him into treatment for as long as possible to help him to avoid relapse.

Conversely, the detox center may also have been operating in your son’s best interest because MANY patients REFUSE to go to treatment and end up relapsing immediately. The detox center may having been focusing on getting his agreement and not have been as concerned about focusing on getting yours. They KNOW that if you son leaves detox without going to treatment that his chances of addiction recovery are almost zero.

So the good news is that your son is in treatment, hopefully it is a good program and they will help him to end his addiction?

You should also consider attending some local Al-anon meetings, working the 12 steps and finding a sponsor. Al-anon can help you to understand your son’s addiction and learn to navigate all of the resources available to you to help your son.

Debbie
