Son confessed to using cocaine?

by Sharmain

My 25 year old son confessed to using cocaine over this weekend...probably over a period of 20 hours also using weed and alcohol...for a bit too long. He is very abusive and to top it off I receive treatment for bipolar and am not stable on meds. I am still at baby step level for 9 months as I've experienced many side effects.

My son is angry at my parents because they made the decision to give him up for adoption. We were reunited in 2006. The cocaine is new and all signs of use have been there for like 4 months now, and he says it was his first time.

I really do wish to know how to be supportive anymore...Help!!!

Your son likely needs mental health counseling and support
by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Sharmain,

Based on the little bit of information you have given me it sounds like your son needs the support of a good mental health counselor.

Often, kids who are put up for adoption struggle with their identity and need the support of a counselor to help them to figure out who they are and what they value in life.

Please try to get your son to go to counseling and begin the process of working through his very difficult and confusing issues. Because you have mental health issues he may also be suffering from similar problems (bi-polar runs in families). Consider taking him to the same people who you are seeing for you meds and have them try to help him too.

You should also consider joining Al-anon and going to meetings three times a week, working the steps and getting a supportive sponsor.

Good luck and I hope you can get the help and support you need for you and your son:)
