Why do they drink when it is SO harmful?

by Lynda

Your article is interesting. My son is an alcoholic, as was his father. I am determined to understand alcoholism as far as is possible. I feel that information will help me to learn to cope with this disease. I do not believe that most people
understand that while only one family may have alcoholism, the disease still affects the entire immediate family.

I am having a very difficult time understanding this self inflicted abuse.

Again, thank you for the information.

Sincerely, Lynda

Alcoholisms harms the entire family!

by: Debbie Wicker

Dear Lynda,

It is very hard to understand when an alcoholic drinks. Why would they voluntarily do something every day that harms all of their relationships, harms all parts of their body, and often causes premature death? It makes no sense?

The best discussion I have found that explains alcoholism is the “Big Book” published by AA. The people who wrote that book themselves alcoholic and were trying to explain the disease.

I would recommend that you consider attending Al-anon meetings, getting a sponsor and working the 12 step program. Family members who are willing to work the steps can begin to accept the disease of alcoholism and learn how to function better with it.

Joining Al-anon will give you the best insight into your son and husband’s alcoholism and should also help you to receive some healing for the wounds you are suffering from the disease.

Alcoholism certainly effects the entire family and the entire family needs support to process their own suffering from this awful disease.

Good Luck,

Debbie
