Do I have to go to rehab for my pain pill addiction?

Hi,

I am a 31 year old lady have been taking schedule 5 pain pills and sleeping tablets for about 4 months can I be treated with medication to quit without going to rehab?

Can I be treated by a gp for addiction to pain meds and sleeping tabs with outgoing to rehab?

Dear Vanisha,

Pain pill addiction or sleeping pill addiction are a diseases of the brain and different in each one of us. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to drug addiction.

There are also many treatments for addiction some which involve inpatient rehab, others that are done on an outpatient basis. Most people try outpatient and group treatment first and only if they relapse and can’t quit do they choose to go to rehab.

Going to see your gp doctor is an excellent idea and he/she can let you know of the options they have available for you. I would also HIGHLY recommend that you go to AA or NA meetings in your area. The 12 step program is a very successful program for helping to manage addiction. The steps work if you work them.
