I have a friend who’s first birthday is coming up. She has asked me to speak at her birthday meeting, and although I am excited, I am not sure what is expected of me or what I should say.

She is obviously depending on me to say something nice, but I just am not sure what to say. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Leanne,

What would you say at your friend’s birthday party under any other circumstance? That sounds like a funny question, but the important key to your remarks should center around your friendship and how proud you are of her accomplishment.

Addiction/alcoholism is a family disease and friends are important, so maybe talk about what her friendship means to you. Just be her friend, encourage her and celebrate with her.
